A Conversation Action is the most flexible action type in Rally. It lets you ask mobilizers to have structured conversations with their contacts — recording responses to one or more prompts along the way — or to complete a self-directed survey about themselves.
This article walks through how to configure a Conversation action from start to finish.

What a Conversation action does
Conversation actions have two modes:
- Relational (contact conversations) — The mobilizer works through a list of their targeted contacts, recording prompt responses for each one. This is the most common use case: a mobilizer has a conversation with a friend, then logs what they learned.
- Non-relational (mobilizer survey) — The mobilizer answers prompts about themselves rather than a contact. Use this for onboarding surveys, pledge forms, or any situation where you're collecting information from the mobilizer directly.
The mobilizer sees their progress as they go (e.g., "7 of 10 contacts") and the action is marked complete once they've finished all targeted contacts or met the success criteria you set.
